Once again, we get a fantastic story in the Korps Universe. This one is a mix of strange dreams, flashbacks to war and post-war settings, bookstores with great secrets, a very steamy scene (putting it mildly--and I mean this positively!), frustrations with broken systems and their effects on queer individuals, and the resulting heartaches for our two main characters over all they face, physically and mentally. There's a LOT going on in this story, and it leaves me wanting more villainy. In other words, it's a Korps story. I think my one bit of criticism is that in the beginning, there's more explaining of things rather than letting us infer what's happened/happening from Lexi's reactions or other sensory details, but after the first two chapters (of Lexi's story, so 1 and 3) the writing feels less explain-y. BUT, despite this one little criticism, and me wondering at first where things were going with Lexi? As the story went on, things clicked more, and it made more sense as to why A.A. Reynolds wrote her in this way. Without spoiling anything, in retrospect this now feels like an awakening from a dead state and truly feeling more alive. Something I greatly relate to, in my discovery of Karen's Korps Universe and the fantastic stories that are part of it. Overall, a VERY good story that I can't wait to see an eventual follow-up to. Please buy and read it if you enjoy the kind of stuff I mentioned in the first paragraph. Support my fellow Korps writers!
